A longitudinal section of the cold-rolled bar shows fractures that were formed in the bar as received from the mill. The cold-rolling operation caused compressive stresses to be formed in the surface layers of the bar which induced tensile stresses in the central portion. The tensile stresses exceeded the ultimate tensile strength of the metal and caused the cracks to form.
