Lathe Boring

Lathe boring is a cutting operation that uses a single-point cutting tool to produce conical and cylindrical surfaces by enlarging an existing opening in a workpiece.  The cutting tool moves parallel to the axis of rotation.  To produce a taper, the cutting tool moves at an angle to the axis of rotation..

Process Characteristics

Uses a single-point cutting tool
Enlarges, straightens, and improves position of existing holes
Produces accurate internal conical and cylindrical surfaces
Tool motion is usually parallel to the axis of rotation for cylindrical surfaces
Produces internal helical feed marks
