Shaping/Planing

|

|
Shaping is a material removal process in which a single-point cutting
tool reciprocates across the face of a stationary workpiece to produce a plane
or sculpted surface. Planing is a material removal process in which
the workpiece reciprocates against a stationary single-point cutting tool
producing a plane surface. Shaping/planing operations are rapidly being
replaced by milling.
Process Characteristics
 | Uses single-point cutting tools |
 | Involves a reciprocating motion between the tool and
workpiece |
 | Produces plane or sculpted surfaces |
 | Leaves parallel feed marks |
